Sick, Vegetarian, Gator
It's been a while since I've had a substantive update, I guess.  There are some major changes...

I've been vegetarian for nine days, now.  If anyone asks me why, I'll just point them to the correlation of the timing between my becoming a vegetarin and the declaration by the World Health Organization of a Swine Flu Pandemic, so they can conclude that I gave up all meat because I think that eating pork can cause the passage of H1N1.  Of course that's nonsense, but it'll make 'em think (about how dumb I must be).  The real reason is that I had already given up pork and beef last September and I found that in doing so I had simply replaced my intake of those meats with chicken, turkey, and fish, each of which is better, but none were particularly good for helping me actually control my weight.  There was a bit of a kicker that happened at work, nine days ago.  A co-worker and I were discussing fish and recent discoveries of the damage that tiny bits of plastic have done to our seas.  To top it off, another co-worker and I were discussing a third co-worker, and I relayed that that co-worker had had a cholesterol scare and shed over 100 pounds, and is now an avid runner and health enthusiast.  He was surprised, and said, "you know wh used to be huge?" and he mentioned another co-worker with whom I'm friends.  He's thin as a freakin' rail and I had no idea he was once over 300 pounds!  One of the keys to his success turns out to have been becoming vegetarian.

So... while I'll call myself a vegetarian, I have to say that I'm not really much of one.  I take no issue in, say, ordering a chicken chow mein for everyone's enjoyment and then picking out all the chicken in my serving.  Meat contact with my food is no big deal.  Also, I figure that there are going to be special occasions, mentally I've budgeted about one per month, which will warrant my enjoying meat.  Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, etc.  Finally, I still love cooking, and I'm still amazing at cooking meat, so for friends and family, I will continue to share my talents with them, even if I won't partake of it myself.

So there's that.  I don't generally eat meat, and I'm doing just fine.  In fact, in the nine days that I haven't, I've lost quite a bit of weight, however it isn't fair to attribute this to my diet.  Turns out that I caught the cold that spread through my family last week.  It hit me hard.  I was too sick to work on Thursday and thought I was okay enough to work on Friday but I wasn't, so I took the rest of the day off.  Saturday, it settled down into my chest and made it so that I couldn't get a full breath, kind of like when you're up in the mountains.  That seems to have gone, today; I have much more energy than I did on Saturday.  I'll be returning to work, tomorrow, but I'm still not at 100%.  I'm not even sure I'm at 75%.  I just think that I'm capable of doing my job and I'm not contagious any longer, so I'll go.  And if I was wrong, there are doctors at work...

During the first three of the last four days of sick, I hardly ate.  I had my multivitamin and apple juice.  An occasional hunk of bread filled my tummy nicely.  Other than that... not much.  This is why I lost weight.  It happens.

So tonight, the family gets home and for some reason, Gator is hissing at both Rozz and me.  She was actually herding Rozz, keeping him stuck in the bedroom.  I came out to help him get a cut of water, and sat down somewhat near to Gator to talk to her.  I was making nice and she came over to me and I pet her a bit.  A moment later, she hopped up on the chair next to me and came around to where I was leaning and rubbed up against me and I pet her some more, and she seemed happy.  I then turned and started talking with Heather, a few feet away.  I didn't move.  After maybe fifteen second, Gator clawed me with no warning and no provocation.  She drew blood, and would have drawn a lot more if Heather hadn't trimmed all her nails earlier today.  Thirty seconds later, she became an outdoor kitty.  Sadly, the moment she was outside, she bolted and we can't find her to show her where we're putting her food and water.  So be it.  Poor girl.  I'm sad about it, but everyones' safety was my main concern.  There is more to this story, including some backstory, but I'm not up for the telling right now.

Okay.  Now... sleep.

First off, welcome to the fold. :)

I still can't figure out how "vegetarianism" can help people lose weight (I have been veg for going on 20 years, I still have another 20Kg that I was to lose!). As you noticed your switching pork and beef for fish and chicken, one thing that I see a lot of is people switching out all meats for cheese and other dairy.

Anyway, if you ever need encouragement about your decision, I suggest picking up a copy of The China Study.

As to your kitty... sounds like she is having a hard time of things. :( I find these useful with my cats, but I don't think that I would put them on if they were outdoor cats. They last a good 3 months or so per application, and if you are trimming her claws already, then you are 1/2 way there.

I can't speak for my co-worker, but my experience so far is this: I've always had the tendency to over-indulge in the quantity of food I eat. I've been particularly good with the choices I've made, I think, but the quantity has been the killer, putting me at about 40Kg overweight. I think part of this has to do with food density. Meat is dense, vegetables are not so dense. Cheese and dairy tends to be dense, too, though due to my cholesterol, cheese, dairy, and egg (yolks) have already been removed from my diet (with the same occasional exceptions for each) for about ten months, and they're not coming back even with this recent change. With vegetables, it's a lot harder to eat until I'm quite as full as I would with meat. I also find that as a vegetarian I want more food sooner. I think these new feelings I have of hunger are actually healthy, and I've started to get used to them. Also, finding a full meal without getting something laden with meat is an additional challenge in our culture. All of this combined will help me lose weight, but it is not a _diet_, per se, as it will really just bump me down to an appropriate stable weight based on my eating habits. To actually lose that last 20Kg, I may have to monitor my calorie intake and my calorie usage, increasing my exercise to the point where I'm burning it off. It's really just a balancing act in the end, right?

Vegetables are indeed, by and large, much less calorie dense than animal products.

But still, my going vegan 6ish years ago resulted in my gaining weight (perhaps also due to the fact that I was helping out with a cupcake recipe... hum...).

That being said, I wasn't trying to discourage you (not that you seem particularly discouraged ;) ). I know that it absolutely has a weight loss effect for many people, and part of that is also because it is just a reminder to eat more healthily, by encouraging us to actually pay attention to what it is that we are eating.

I don't have any experience with eating out west as a vegetarian, but I know that as a vegan I can still walk in to most restaurants here and find something to eat (though, it isn't always easy, and sometimes I have to order off the menu, but that tends to be the exception, not the rule). I always thought that it would be easier in California for some reason.

I will be monitoring your experience with a keen interest. Studies have shown that a vegan diet has a dramatic effect on blood sugar levels, so I am tempted. I am also at a weight plateau. I also loves my meat!

I hadn't really thought about it... I'd already essentially cut dairy and eggs from my diet a few months back, so I guess I'm as much a vegan as I am a vegetarian. I don't know that I'd call myself a vegan due to the fact that most vegans I've met are passionate about not consuming animal products because they're animal products, and I'm in it for a completely different set of reasons...

You know I don't have a blood sugar level issue, right? It surprised my doc that I didn't, being as heavy as I am, but I don't. I'll try to post all my numbers for your benefit, but my focus is primarily on cholesterol and glycerins. To make up for it, I'll try to get my historical numbers for present comparison. I'll document them after my physical on Tuesday.

Please don't get bg numbers for me. It won't mean anything since you have normal numbers now. I am more interested in the weight loss and health issues.

Are you using any other factors in your diet? Like Glycemic Index, fiber, etc?

So, the one accidental bite of chicken was this month's allotment? I'm curious to track your weight loss, it will be quite a revelation (maybe we can write a book!) if a carb only diet (apple juice, multivitamins and bread) will continue to prove a success. I think it goes to show that it's not what you eat, it's how much you eat. Power to you in your endeavor anyway, my cardiologist recently recommended a strict vegan diet to me, there's a lot of research that says it's by far the healthiest choice.

Bummer about Gator! Has she had the experience of her family returning home from a dog infested environment before?
